SSR 46th Annual Meeting - (Page 1)

WelCome from the 2013 SSr PreSident Welcome to the 46th Annual Meeting of the SSR in the spectacular city of Montréal! Thanks to the hard work of the Program Committee under the exceptional leadership of Janice Bailey and Janice Evans, our scientific program offers a broad array of cutting-edge topics in the reproductive sciences for you to sample and enjoy. Our theme, Reproductive President Susan S. Suarez, Health: Nano to Global, was chosen Ph.D.. to illustrate the breadth of reproductive biology in approaches, applicability, and global impact. The Local Arrangements Committee, chaired by Bruce Murphy and Hugh Clarke, has prepared a terrific social program so that you can enjoy the international atmosphere and flavors of Montréal with old friends and new colleagues. Local Arrangements also worked with the Development Committee to provide extra funding beyond that provided by your registration fees in order to bring you outstanding speakers from all over the world. Be sure to stop by the SSR Registration Desk to thank the SSR staff for making all of our plans a reality. Enjoy! Susan S. Suarez, Ph.D. 2013 President, SSR Program Committee WelCome The 2013 SSR meeting, with the theme Reproductive Health: Nano to Global, will present a wide range of the latest breakthroughs in reproductive biology. Our plenary speaker list includes a nice mix of familiar and fresh Program Committee Co-Chairs Janice faces. The Keynote Bailey, Ph.D. (left), and Janice Evans, Speaker is Dr. Marty Ph.D. (right). Matzuk and the Historical Perspectives Lecturer is Dr. JoAnne Richards, both of whom are prominent SSR members. Their research represents the best of basic science and translational applications in our realm of reproductive biology. Dr. Mitinori Saitou of Kyoto University will present the State-of-the-Art Lecture on his breakthrough work on in vitro generation of both male and female germ cells that produced normal mice pups. Dr. Sabra Klein from Johns Hopkins University will deliver a Plenary Lecture on her exciting work on sex differences, with a focus on endocrine regulation of immune responses. The President’s Symposium will illustrate many of the “nano” aspects relevant to research in the reproductive sciences. The talks by Jackson Kirkman-Brown, Lonnie Shea, and Jerry Taylor will highlight a distinct niche of our field about which Susan Suarez is particularly passionate—the application of approaches in the physical and quantitative sciences. The 2013 meeting continues with the format initiated by the 2012 SSR Program Committee, replacing minisymposia with themed, concurrent “modules.” The four modules for the 2013 meeting represent the four pillars of reproductive biology: gametes, gonads, hormones, and reproductive tracts. A principal objective for the module format is to generate more interaction and in-depth discussion; our module session chairs will provide a unifying introduction to each session and serve as discussion leaders. The schedules of the modules will be identical so that those who choose to attend different sessions can go smoothly from one module to another. We were very excited to have received a record number of regular and late-breaking abstract submissions. These numbers demonstrate that the reproductive biology community continues to bring their hottest work to the SSR meeting. The platform presentations remain popular. While there is just not enough time to accommodate everyone who wants to present his/her abstract as a platform talk, we are pleased to announce that 36% of the submissions that requested this consideration (and 21% of all submissions) will be presented as platform presentations within the module sessions or in platform sessions. Moving from session to session will be easy, with all session rooms on the same floor of the Palais and in close proximity to each other. Moreover, all posters will be displayed for the duration of the meeting, ensuring excellent exposure of these studies and ample time for interaction. Last but not least, we know that everyone comes to the meeting not only for the scientific sessions but also to enjoy the venue and time with colleagues and friends. To facilitate this, we designed the meeting schedule to include long lunch periods and frequent breaks. A great number of thank-you’s are in order, as none of this would have been possible without the help of many people. We are truly lucky that so many of our colleagues care so deeply about the field to put in the hard work needed for a successful annual meeting! Our Program Committee members and those who helped with abstract review are listed below, with extraspecial thanks to our module team leaders (marked with *) and abstract review team leaders (marked with §). We also extend our warmest personal thanks to the great team in the SSR Business Office without whom none of this would have been possible. In closing, it has been a privilege to work with Susan Suarez and to provide this important service to the Society. We are very honored to have been tasked with this responsibility for the Society. Thanks to all the hard work of those who have participated in planning this event and to all of you attending, we are confident that the 46 Annual Meeting will be a huge success!
