TODAYcrop insurance Industry Support of FFA For almost 20 years, NCIS, on behalf of its member companies, has given financial support to the National FFA Organization. Along with additional support directly from private insurance companies in the form of scholarships and proficiency award support, the crop insurance industry has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to support agriculture education throughout the United States. In addition, NCIS staff and others from the crop insurance companies serve as judges for the National Proficiency Awards at the annual FFA Convention. The award co-sponsored by NCIS is the Diversified Crop ProductionPlacement Award. Judging requires reviewing the four finalist’s documentation of their respective Supervised Agriculture Experiences (SAE) prior to the convention, and once there, interviewing each candidate to determine the scope of their knowledge and skills they have learned while completing their four year project. SAEs include activities such as starting a business or working for an established company. Classroom learning and SAEs are further reinforced through curriculum-enhancing programs within the community. “It’s a great opportunity to see agriculture first-hand in the lives of high school students from all across the country,” said Laurie Langstraat, NCIS. “I’m always impressed with their skill level and passion for working in agriculture.” Each year NCIS receives dozens of thank you notes from students who receive the Diversified Crop Production - Placement Awards at the state and regional levels.
