NEWS FROM THE DISTRICTS Fall 2013 The School of Medicine Research Building at the University of California, Riverside, where the first new public medical school in California in 40 years has opened. Director Gregory M. Gullahorn, MD District 1: San Diego and Imperial Counties * Currently being built on the La Jolla campus, Scripps' new Prebys Cardiovascular Institute will be a seven-story, 108-bed facility focused on cardiac care. It currently is scheduled to open in 2015. * The San Diego Beacon Community is implementing a new health care IT initiative in the county. Funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, the information exchange allows sharing of electronic medical record information between participating providers, clinics, hospitals, emergency medical services and public-health organizations across the many IT platforms and systems. * Rady Children's Hospital opened a new 30-bed cardiovascular ICU. * Sharp Mary Birch Hospital is completing a major renovation, with expansion of the NICU to 84 beds, conversion to all-private patient rooms, and a new minimally-invasive-surgery floor. * Mary Birch has also been designated as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology, one of only three in California. Director Stanley D. Brauer, MD District 2: Inyo, Mono, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties * The first new public medical school in California in 40 years has opened: The University of California, Riverside, School of Medicine convened its first class of 50 students in August 2013. * A Universal Health Services facility, Corona Regional Medical Center, closed its inpatient pediatric unit on Sept. 5, 2013. * The brand-new Temecula Valley Hospital opened on Oct. 13, 2013. Director John G. Brock-Utne, MD, PhD District 4: Monterey, San Benito, Southern San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties * Stanford University Hospital held a groundbreaking event for its extensive new expansion on May 2, 2013. * The Stanford University School of Medicine has a new dean, Dr. Lloyd B.
