California Anesthesia
Residency in 2014
By Manuel Pardo, Jr., MD
T
he state of California is home to 11 anesthesia
residency programs accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME),
and one program approved by the American Osteopathic
Association (AOA). Residents are the future of our
specialty and the CSA is proud to support their
development as professionals. In this first issue of the
CSA's annual publication, we want to highlight trends
and events encountered by current residents in 2014.
The CSA includes residents on many of its committees.
This provides residents the opportunity to learn more
about the specialty, and see first hand the many ways
that CSA advocates for its members and our specialty.
Residents also participated actively in the ASA
Legislative Conference last May in Washington, DC,
and at the ASA annual meeting in New Orleans.
New ABA Written Examination
The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) has
added a new written examination, the BASIC exam,
to its requirements for certification. The current CA-2
residents (Class of 2016) were the first cohort required
to take this exam when it was offered in July, 2014.
Because it was the very first administration, there
was more than the usual amount of anxiety among
residents. Many programs tailored their didactics to
prepare residents for the exam, and the ABA provided
sample test questions. The pass rate ended up being
almost 97% nationally, but there is no guarantee it will
remain at this level in the future.

UCSF's eminent professor Edmond Eger, MD, was the guest of honor at the WARC, seen here with Roya Yumul, MD, PhD, and
Cedars-Sinai residents Nir Maghen, Lauren Frizzell, Yelena Neyman, Ashkan Farzad, Matthew Eng, and Shahriar Pirouz
