a graduate of the UCLA residency program and did
his cardiac fellowship at USC, is eager to forge closer
ties to CSA. He and other HSA members expressed
interest in developing a third Hawaii meeting to take
place on Oahu, with HSA's co-sponsorship. This is
certainly an appealing concept to explore.
I am honored to be invited to the ASA's upcoming
Strategic Dialogue Summit in January. This is a
new event for ASA, which will be limited to about
50 "thought leaders" from inside and outside the
specialty. As explained by ASA's Immediate Past
President Jeff Plagenhoef, MD, FASA, "The purpose
of this summit is to create unity within the anesthesia
community so that 15 or 20 years down the road we're
doing an even better job of taking care of the patients
we serve." Dr. Plagenhoef and ASA President Jim
Grant, MD, MBA, FASA, decided to plan this summit
meeting out of their shared belief that anesthesiology
is at a transformative moment in our history.
This year, for the first time, our spring Board of
Directors' meeting will coincide with our Annual
Educational Meeting and Workshops, which will
take place March 22-25 in Palm Springs. In keeping
with our new emphasis on practice management,
the Saturday afternoon sessions will be devoted to
topics in practice management, including MACRA,
leadership development, and contracting essentials.
The annual Leffingwell Memorial Lecture will be
delivered by Stan Stead, MD, MBA, FASA, the ASA
Vice President for Professional Affairs, whose talk is
titled, "'Winter is Coming': Lessons from Westeros
in dealing with inevitable changes in healthcare." It
should be fascinating, even for those who haven't
binge-watched Game of Thrones (or actually read the
books)!

So Many People to Thank
As 2017 draws to a close, I have so many people to
thank for giving me the opportunity to serve as CSA
President, and for all their help in advancing the work
of our Society:

Linda Hertzberg, MD, FASA, Steven Haddy, MD, and CSA
President Karen Sibert, MD, FASA

The outstanding officers and the Board of
Directors of CSA;
Rita Agarwal, MD, FAAP, who seamlessly
took over the reins of CPPC;
Narendra Trivedi, MD, FASA, who graciously
agreed to serve as temporary chair of the
Committee on Legislative Affairs this year at
short notice;
CSA Immediate Past President, Mark
Zakowski, MD, FASA, whose ceaseless efforts
last year left GASPAC in a much stronger
position to advance our advocacy agenda;
Drs. Linda Mason, Linda Hertzberg, Beverly
Philip, Mary Dale Peterson, and other women
leaders in the ASA who serve as such powerful
role models;
David Butler, our Executive Director, and his
remarkable, dedicated, and capable staff;
Our team at KP Public Affairs - Bryce
Docherty, Vanessa Cajina, Alison Macleod,
and Lisa Yarbrough - who give us such
outstanding support in advocacy and
communications;
And, of course, my husband, Steven Haddy,
MD.

I look forward to a great year in 2018!
