all Jointed Dolls (or BJDs) were first introduced by
Volks of Japan in 1998. Today the dolls have captured
imaginations all over the world. UFDC's 2013
convention proudly presented a special and comprehensive
exhibit of these dolls called Beautiful Boys, Gorgeous Girls.
What is a BJD? It must be made of resin, although vinyl
and porcelain are now acceptable, and the doll must have
a removable wig and removable eyes. All BJDs must be
paintable. The beautiful ball jointed dolls must be customizable
in every way for them to be considered genuine BJDs.

WINTER 2014
Joy-Joy Riddle and Mary Foote created a captivating display
of 243 dolls that ranged in size from 5 centimeters to 105
centimeters (2-to-42 inches tall). The exhibit showcased BJDs
from 1998 through present day. Most Asian and American BJD
companies were represented.
The BJDs' rise in popularity has paralleled that of the
Internet, which has fueled the desire for these artistic and
different dolls. Many dolls were needed for this special exhibit
and the Internet made it possible to locate specific dolls.
The exhibit was made possible because of the generosity of
many collectors.
