And on an economic level, UFDC promotes our hobby which bolsters the value of our personal doll collections. Meet a Member I 'd like to introduce one member of our UFDC family who began his doll collection as a child and became part of the doll world as an adult. Don Wilson is a member of Charm City Dolling Club in the Baltimore, Maryland area. He started collecting "Dolls of Color" ever since he received his first doll, "Susie," from his Nanny while growing up in Alabama in the 1940s. Susie, a handmade cloth doll of color, gained many friends as Don's collection grew. His mother, a seamstress by trade, opened a sewing shop where Don's jobs included making covered buttons. From this experience he developed an appreciation of fabric, costuming and cloth dolls. This experience and Don's college education led him to the decorative home divisions of retail department stores as a buyer and then a road representative. In 1982 he was hired by Seymour Mann Gifts and Tableware as Vice President of Sales and National Sales Manager, responsible for Mann's nation-wide trade and collectible shows. Seymour Mann introduced their affordable commercial porcelain dolls at the 1982 New York Toy Fair with their first doll artist signing by well-known doll artist and UFDC member Pat Kolesar. Over the next twenty-five years Don exhibited Seymour Mann dolls at trade shows across the nation. At the Washington, DC Teddy Bear and Doll Classic, Don met several members of the Charm City Dolling Club and was asked to do a program. Later he and his wife Beverly, who shares his love of black dolls, joined the club where they remain members today. Most recently Don organized and chaired Charm City Dolling Club's project to preserve the historic Sykesville Colored School House in Maryland and hosted their first black doll show event in June of 2013.
