very papier-mâché, china, bisque or composition doll
begins with the talent and skill of an artist to sculpt
the original which the manufacturer uses to make their
production molds. So too the printed cloth doll begins with the
talent, vision and hand of the artist who designs it.
Early cloth dolls were made from patterns devised
or interpreted by their makers and had faces that were
embroidered, painted, or drawn. These processes worked
especially well in the realm of mother-made dolls. As cloth
dolls began to find a wider market cottage industry ventures
began to proliferate. Dolls such as those by Izannah Walker,
Emma Adams, Martha Chase and Käthe Kruse relied on their
creator's own design abilities and were finished with needle
or painting techniques which were applied by the artists
themselves or taught to select employees to facilitate the
production of the finished dolls. This studio approach allowed
larger numbers of dolls to be manufactured but each doll
retained the look and feel that the originator first designed.

depictions of Santa Claus established
the image of the jolly old man that we
are familiar with today. This illustration
