Then you have a collection, and you know what goes next. One day, a certain doll smiles at you, and you suddenly realize she needs a special spring outfit. Maybe a coordinating purse. Definitely a jacket and shoes. Matching jewelry would be nice. Oh, did the other dolls see that she got something new? Look quickly, or you'll miss the twinkle in your doll's eye when she realizes you enjoy shopping as much as she loves new clothes. The more your collection grows, however, the more you understand every doll collector's dilemma: What should you DO with everything? The summer before I began high school, my grandparents and I took a long road trip to visit friends and family. Somewhere in the wilds of Oregon, we stopped at a farm belonging to my grandpa's war buddy. Though the cherry orchard was lovely and the cows were friendly, I couldn't wait for the moment when I could see his wife's doll collection. At last we entered the farmhouse parlor, where the dolls lined every wall. Unfortunately, I couldn't see them. Lit by a single table lamp, the low glass-front oak cases were like dark caverns. It was a huge disappointment. There could have been many rare and lovely dolls, but they were hidden in the shadows, and I didn't know enough to tell one from another. When I began collecting as an adult, one of my goals was to display my dolls so that others could enjoy them as much as I do. I knew that dolls should be kept safe from light and dust, but what other options did I have? In the past, the best way to learn how to display dolls was to visit collectors' homes or museums, where dolls were usually
