By Betty Nett "It is a happy talent to know how to play." Ralph Waldo Emerson A catastrophe was about to happen at 6:30 a.m., the morning of July 24, 1872, in the picturesque New England village of Concord, Massachusetts. According to an account published in the New York Times, "Fire was discovered in the roof of Ralph Waldo Emerson's house by a family workman ... an alarm speedily brought the two hand-engines of the town, too late, however, to be of material service." When the family became aware of the fire, Emerson rallied his neighbors to save hundreds of his books and papers, all the furniture "and collections of many years," including "Abby," a wax-over papier-mâché doll, (Fig. 1) the childhood companion of Emerson's youngest daughter, Edith. How fortunate for today's doll collectors that Emerson, his wife, Lidian, and their oldest daughter, Ellen Tucker Emerson, who were all living at the Concord home at the time of the fire, considered the dolls important enough to save. Fig. 1 Abby was the childhood companion of Edith Emerson, daughter of Ralph Waldo and Lidian Emerson. Courtesy of Wenham Museum 60 WINTER 2015
