More than Meets the Eye: True Stories of Seven Dolls
by Lee L. Pierce
A
fitting title, More Than
Meets the Eye: True
Stories of Seven Dolls,
is a lovely collection of doll
provenances told by their owners
and from the point of view of
the dolls. Through her skills as
a storyteller, combined with her
years of teaching and traveling,
author Lee Pierce, weaves the history of her dolls into a
cohesive tapestry. Readers will be captivated to learn about
the "lives" of some of Lee's ethnic dolls including Perla's
spy story, Kasha's escape from a death camp and Mucuda's
extreme sacrifices. Seven chapters reveal seven stories of
love, tragedy, luck and hope. Throughout the book, Lee
cleverly transforms herself into the character, Andrea, and
shares how she started acquiring some of her special dolls.
She describes a chilly Friday morning when her grandmother
took her to a bookstore where she first saw an unusual doll in
the window. She tells of her frightening encounter with Mrs.
Dickinson, the nightmares it gave her and how it changed her
life to collect dolls. Lee's doll stories are essentially the true
stories of the children that owned the dolls. Those children
were the courageous young people who grew up in different
parts of the world, often during war times, all sharing a
common thread of loving their dolls unconditionally. Some
of their stories were painful,
while others, endearing. The
stories always stayed with Lee,
and were her inspiration to write
about the children's unusual,
true experiences. This book is a
delightful read for anyone who
enjoys learning about a doll's
provenance and uncovering their
fascinating secrets hidden within.
Lee Pierce has been writing since she was a child,
penning short stories, poetry and plays. Her first play,
"Tea and Tyranny," presented at the Harvard Loeb Drama
Center in 1976, won the Bicentennial Grant for Boston and
Cambridge. She has published books for her family and
friends and has used her collection of over two-hundred
international dolls to teach adults and children about the
cultures of the world. Lee often wonders if her passion for
collecting influenced her extensive travels throughout the
United States, Europe and Latin America.
