REVIEW OF CURRENT LITERATURE Ewers R, Lambrecht JT. Oral Implants Bioactivating Concepts. Hanover Park, Ill: Quintessence Publishing Co, Ltd; 2013. From a multi-national group of authors, this textbook provides an all-inclusive scientific and clinical state of the art reference of the interrelated periodontal and prosthetics components of implant dentistry. The well-written text is supported with 585 illustrations that create a route for the implant team to achieve the best possible esthetic and functional clinical outcomes. The text is divided into 6 sections that include: Basic Principles, Clinical Planning, Bone Regeneration Techniques and Bone Classification, Standard Clinical Situations, Special Techniques, and Complications. The Basic Principles section includes an outstanding discussion on bone physiology as it relates to bone tissue engineering. The chapter authors make the physiology relevant to the clinician. The Clinical Planning section is well referenced and includes imaging techniques, platform switching, short and narrow plateaued implants and facial esthetics engineering, plus other pertinent topics. Drs Rolf Ewers and Guenter Russmueller provide an in-depth discussion on distraction osteogenesis that includes longitudinal distraction, alveolar distraction, vertical gradual distraction and pedicled segmented osteotomy (inlay graft). The material is supported with precise schematic diagrams and photographs. The Standard Clinical Situations and Special Techniques cover every conceivable case that may present to the clinician. The Complications section provides an excellent account of the diagnosis and treatment of iatrogenic nerve injury. Implant induced maxillary sinusitis is covered from an intraoperative and postoperative perspective. J. Thomas Lambrecht presents a well-written chapter on mandibular lingual perforation that is supplemented with a detailed table that provides 22 references of life-threatening hemorrhage after mandibular lingual perforation. The chapter on drug-related complications covers bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws. Monoclonal antibody (denosumab), chemotherapy, and corticosteroid-induced bone necrosis are also covered. The Complications section closes with peri-implantitis diagnosis and treatment. This text would be an excellent addition to the library of all dentists who place or restore dental implants. James L.
