pcso business component reports DR. KEN FISCHER AWARDED THE CAO DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD n 1993, CAO began acknowledging its most dedicated volunteer leaders with the prestigious Distinguished Service Award. This purpose of this award is to acknowledge those volunteers who truly go beyond the call of duty. The award is given to “an orthodontist or person who has made a notable contribution to the science and art of orthodontics or who has contributed valuable and devoted services to CAO and its membership.” On Friday, October 5, 2012, at the CAO meeting in Monterey, CA, Dr. Tom Bales, president of CAO, awarded Dr. Ken Fischer (Villa Park, CA) the CAO Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Fischer has been involved in dental and orthodontic leadership throughout his career, having served as president of the CAO, Orange County Dental Association, Foundation for Orthodontic Research, as well as served as the California component board member to the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, a consultant to the Dental Board of California and sat as their chairman of the Ethics and Principles Revision committee. He currently is a visiting lecturer at UCLA and Loma Linda Orthodontic Dept. School Of Dentistry. He has served on numerous committees of the CAO including chairman of the Legislative Committee. He currently serves as a PCSO delegate to the AAO House of Delegates and is a member of the AAO Council on Communication. His professional memberships include the American Association of Orthodontists, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, California Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, California Dental Association, Orange County Dental Society and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Fischer received his DDS from the University of Missouri, Kansas City,in 1971 and then did a general dentistry rotation as a captain in the United States Air Force from 1971-1973. He received his Orthodontic Certificate from UCLA in 1975. Upon graduation, he opened his practice in Villa Park, CA, in 1975 and has remained at that same location for the past 37 years. Dr. Fischer has been married to his wife Lisa for 16 years, is an avid woodworker and reader, but loves to spend most of his free time with his nine-year-old granddaughter Erika. CAO’s Web site is being redesigned to offer many more features and resources for our members. In addition, a second Web site intended for use by consumers and the public is also in development along with branding materials that offer a more mature and sophisticated look. You will be hearing more about these initiatives in the coming weeks and months. Continuing Education has become a major focus for CAO again. Two CE courses primarily designed for the orthodontic staff were presented in Monterey. This proved to be a very successful program and CAO will once again be offering staff training courses immediately preceding the 2013-2015 PCSO Annual Sessions in San Diego, Anaheim and Palm Springs respectively. Course topics for 2013 will be announced soon. CAO is also exploring alternative means of providing CE opportunities to staff. Be sure to watch your email and the CAO Web site (www.caortho.org) for more information! CAO continues to offer our Orthodontic Assistant Permit (OAP) training course at a reduced rate to CAO members. Orthodontists can provide their staff with training in preparation to receive the OAP designation in order to expand their scope of duties. CAO values advocacy efforts and sponsors experienced representation at the California Dental Board meetings. We work closely with our legislative liaison from the California Dental Association (CDA) as well. CAO sponsors Peer Review calibration workshops for members wishing to serve on review panels when complaints arise with orthodontic colleagues. These workshops afford orthodontists who experience dental board complaints the privilege of being reviewed by peers rather than general I CALIFORNIA he past year has been a very productive time for CAO. We have several very important initiatives in progress. CAO has launched a statewide Public Awareness and branding initiative to bring value to members and create a T unified voice for CAO. The goal has been to piggyback with, and further promote the consumer awareness programs currently undertaken by the AAO and make them even more relevant to the needs of California orthodontists. To date, this project has been funded solely from the CAO operating budget with no dues increases passed along to members. WINTER 2012 • PCSO BULLETIN 9 http://www.caortho.org
