TADs
editoriaL
SPECIAL SECTION
O
nce each year, we plan to publish a special
issue focusing on current issues in orthodontics. In the inaugural issue of this new
feature, our topic is temporary anchorage
devices (TADs), which seems fitting on the occasion of the joint meeting of the 78th PCSO Annual
Session and the 6th World Implant Orthodontic Conference (WIOC), to be held this October 2-5 at the
Marriott Conference Center in Anaheim, California.
The clinical columns in this issue focus on TADs.
Also, we are launching a new column entitled
"PCSO Program Talk," which we hope to publish
annually. It will feature a series of questions on
a single topic posed to a group of respondents,
for example, our 12 PCSO Orthodontic Program
Directors, Chairmen, or other participants. The
format will be similar to "The Hot Seat," a recent
addition to the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics
(JCO). I am pleased to inform you that Dr. Alyssa
Levin (alyssa@northvalleysmiles.com) will
moderate this column.
In this issue, Dr. Levin has organized and
summarized the results of a survey that asked PCSO
programs about their usage of TADs. The survey
results show that the majority of programs use TADs
for molar intrusion in open bite cases and
en-masse retraction or protraction. The hard palate is
recommended as the most reliable installation site for
TADs, and factors related to surgical technique have
been seen as the most common reasons for
TAD failures.
Also in this issue's case report, WIOC President
Dr. Ravindra Nanda submits one TAD case from
the orthodontic department at the University of
Connecticut (UConn). Dr. Taranpreet K. Chandhoke
and Dr. Laura Posada treated this case under the
supervision of Dr. Nanda during their residency
program at UConn. The case will also be posted as
a video presentation on the PCSO website. In this
issue's "Faculty Files," Dr. Glen Roberson suggests
the factors to consider when using TADs.

In "Seasoned Practitioner's Corner," Dr. Terry
McDonald interviews Dr. Mike Chaffee, in a
conversation focused on the use of TADs. Finally, in
"Pearls of the Pacific," Drs. Aaron Rouleau and Justin
Cooper report on a case using a TAD in the edentulous
area to retract the mandibular dentition.
To obtain good orthodontic treatment results, anchorage
control is important. With the help of TADs, undesirable
tooth movement can be prevented, and the amount and
direction of needed tooth movement can be controlled
in three dimensions. Furthermore, if patients decline
surgical treatment options, some can avoid orthognathic
surgery and still realize clinically acceptable and
esthetic results through careful diagnosis, treatment
planning, and the use of TADs.
As Proffit mentions, the sagittal, vertical, and transverse
range of tooth movement can be expressed as an
envelope of discrepancy. It shows theoretical boundaries
of potential range of tooth movement. TADs have
become a viable alternative treatment option in modern
orthodontics. I hope all who read this issue of the
Bulletin will think about clinical applications for TADs
in expanding their orthodontic treatment boundaries
before they come to the PCSO and WIOC joint meeting
in the Fall.
I hope you will enjoy this special issue. To make our
PCSO Bulletin stronger, your participation is always
welcome. Regarding future special issues, if there are
any topics that you would like to see discussed, please
feel free to contact me.
