The Big Easy: Not Always So Easy
I
Dr. Jawor
have just returned home from New Orleans, A.K.A. the
"Big Easy," where I attended the AAO Annual Session. If
you did not attend, well - you snooze, you lose! Each year,
the event presents an opportunity to interact with other AAO
members, and many PCSO members. This year's meeting was
attended by more than 15,000 members, staff, exhibitors and
guests. New Orleans and its people are so welcoming, and
the Cajun and Creole dining is to die for. From the feedback I
received, every single attendee thoroughly enjoyed the event.
I think most would have just one complaint: that the meeting
was too short.
Some people are surprised to learn that spring is a very busy
time for PCSO volunteer leadership. Fall is the time most
members would guess to be busiest, considering the October
PCSO Annual Session. Activity levels really tick up during the
winter: planning for the Annual Session is in its final, critical
stages; planning for the next year's Session is well underway,
and the 2016 Planning Committee has already been formed
and is in the process of selecting the speakers and theme; and
the work of the board of directors and PCSO delegation to the
AAO House of Delegates (HOD) begins in earnest.
The AAO House of Delegates is a large group - 64 members
plus a number of alternates, all of the AAO Trustees and
officers, and several staff members are fully engaged in the
"business of the House." Every constituent group has an
important presence at the HOD. Each delegation represents
the interests of our AAO members. I am proud to say that
PCSO leadership is evident in every aspect of the HOD. PCSO
has the largest delegation, with 12 representatives, our trustee,
and two alternates. PCSO is also represented by those on
the podium, with Dr. Robert Varner serving as 2014-15 AAO
President and Dr. Gary Baughman as Speaker of the House.
These two gentlemen serve all AAO Delegates and members,
but do not get directly involved with PCSO delegation
discussions or programs. It inspires great pride to see these
PCSO Past Presidents in such important leadership positions
with the AAO. Another PCSO Past President, Dr. Norman
Nagel, is now the PCSO Trustee; his duties extend from the
AAO board and councils to the PCSO board and delegation.
2
His insight and leadership is invaluable to PCSO's leaders
as they navigate both national and regional issues.
The PCSO delegation consists of leaders from throughout
the western states and provinces of the U.S. and Canada,
some of whom have served on the delegation for some
time, some of whom are new to the group. This year, our
delegation members were:
Dr. Ronald Wolk-Alberta, Delegation Chair
Dr. Frank Beglin-Nevada
Dr. Ken Fischer-California
Dr. Bryan Hicks-British Columbia
Dr. Lili Horton-Hawaii
Dr. Ron Jawor-California
Dr. Paul Kasrovi-California
Dr. Bob Meister-California
Dr. Rob Merrill-Washington
Dr. Tom Merrill-Washington
Dr. Michael Pickard-Idaho
Dr. Kurt Stormberg-California
Dr. Erik TinHan-Hawaii
Dr. Bryan Williams-Washington
Every delegate devotes a great deal of time each year
to studying and keeping on top of the issues facing
AAO members, resolutions brought forward by other
constituents or by the AAO board and councils, and
understanding the guidelines for House business. In their
efforts, the delegates are supported by the Delegation Chair
(DC). Our DC is the very masterful and energetic Dr. Ron
Wolk from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Not only does the DC
help delegates understand the process, he takes a lead role
in diplomatic discussions with other constituents through
their Delegation Chairs. While every delegation has an
obligation to act in the best interest of all AAO members
as they see fit, understanding the climate and learning
the viewpoints of the delegates from the seven other
constituent territories, through the DC, adds depth and
perspective to decisions. Providing such depth is the duty
and heavy responsibility of the DC.
