TADs in ORTHODONTICS: a Review
By Glen Roberson, DMD, Clinic Director & Assistant Professor, College of
Dental Medicine, Henderson Campus, Roseman University of Health Sciences
I
n orthodontics,
anchorage is an
important factor
to consider during
the treatment planning
process. Failure to consider
anchorage can create a
vast array of treatment
anomalies, including
increased treatment time,
compromised case results,
and increased costs for the
orthodontist. As such, any
device that may help the
orthodontist to establish
the necessary anchorage,
whether used during the
entire course of treatment
or for only a portion thereof,
should be considered. One
such device is a temporary
anchorage device (TAD) or
skeletal anchorage device.
TADs have become valuable
tools in the orthodontist's
armamentarium, allowing
for anchorage situations
that were at one time
unachievable without the full
compliance of the patient.
used for restorative purposes,
TADs are designed such that
osseointegration is not the
primary method of retention.
Instead, the screwlike design
allows the threads of the
TAD to engage the cortex of
the alveolar bone in the area
of insertion. As such, the
quality and thickness of the
cortical bone have been shown
in studies to be a factor in
the success rate of TADs in
orthodontic use.1-4
TADs
The design of the TAD also
contributes to the simplicity
of inserting the device. Most,
if not all, of the newer TAD
designs employ both a selftapping and self-drilling
construction. Self-tapping
DESIGN
TADs are designed and
manufactured to be both
functional and easy to use.
They are constructed primarily
of surgical-grade titanium
with a polished surface that
allows for not only good
biocompatibility, but also
for ease of removal at the
completion of treatment.
