AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ORTHODONTISTS FOUNDATION report AAO FOUNDATION @ PCSO MEETING AWARDS * * At the recent PCSO Annual Session, the AAOF held a contest as follows: * Support Orthodontic Education & Research (And maybe win an iPad) * * * * * Anyone who makes a Continued Commitment to the Specialty® of $5,000 or more, or who successfully solicits a pledge of $5,000 or more, receives one chance to win an iPad (in the form of a $500 gift certificate) from the AAOF for each $5,000 pledged. Pledges must be made during the PCSO meeting with the drawing to be held Saturday at 5:00 PM in the Exhibit Hall. You do not have to be present to win. During the meeting, Kurt Stormberg (PCSO/CA) made a Regent pledge ($25,000), making him Regent #546, and Wanda Claro (PCSO/CA) made an additional pledge to support orthodontic education and research. Dr. Stromberg won the iPad in the drawing held Saturday in the exhibit hall. AWARDS The 2015 awards materials are currently on the AAOF website. The deadline for proposals was Monday, December 15, 2014, at 5:00 PM. Funding for 2015 was approved as follows: An aggregate of $715,000 (an increase of 10% over the 2014 aggregate), in keeping with the board's aspiration to increase the Awards Program by 10% annually. The number of awards within each category is to be determined by the number and quality of proposals: WINTER 2014 * PCSO BULLETIN * Junior/Mid-Career Faculty Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Awards (OFDFA) Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (PFA) Biomedical Research Awards (BRA) Center Awards (CA) Collaborative Projects Research Aid Awards (RA) Part-time faculty Current residents Among those projects funded for 2014 were three from the PCSO: OFDFA: Kiho "Kyle" Lee, University of California Los Angeles BRA: Christine Hong, University of California Los Angeles; Rodrigo F. Viecilli, Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (See his bio and photo below.) PCSO graduate orthodontic residency programs have received more funding from the AAOF than have those from any other constituent organization. NAMED AWARDS The Foundation has announced a Named Awards effort to encourage large pledges/gifts in the $250,000 - $500,000 range, with support at this level affording the donor(s) the opportunity to name one of the Foundation's awards. Recently, the Schulman Study Group made a Continued Commitment to the Specialty® of $500,000 and named the Martin "Bud" Schulman Post-doctoral Fellowship Award, the only PFA available for naming. There are 10 Biomedical Research Awards and one Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Award still available for naming, whether funded Dr. Kurt Stormberg, winner of the iPad, with Dr. Terrie Yoshikane, PCSO representative to the AAO Foundation Board of Directors. by a single donor as many as 10, all pledging at the Regent ($25,000) level or higher. AAO BRANDING AND RESEARCH INITIATIVE At the last conference call meeting of the AAOF BOD, the Directors took steps to further integrate the Foundation into the overall AAO Branding Effort, with new printed materials and a revised website expected soon. The RESEARCH INITIATIVE - the previously announced campaign to help ensure that the very best orthodontic research in the world takes place in graduate orthodontic residency programs in the U.S. and Canada - will remain the focus of the organization's fundraising efforts, and the new branding look will be reflected in those materials as well. 15
