pcso business AAO Leaders Complete Terms in San Francisco The End of an Era for PCSO by Jill Nowak, PCSO Executive Director "O Drs. Varner and Baughman. TIMELINE Carol and Gary Baughman. 12 nce in a blue moon" seems like a trite saying, but I think it's an apt description for something that will occur this May. At the AAO Annual Session to be held in San Francisco, Dr. Bob Varner (Roseburg, OR) will complete his term as AAO President, and Dr. Gary Baughman (Stockton, CA) will finish his service as AAO Speaker of the House. It is rare that the AAO President and the AAO Speaker both hail from the same constituent-in fact it only happens every 24 years, so the Jaye and Bob Varner. 1974 Bob Varner graduates from Oregon ortho program. last time this happened was nearly a quarter of a century ago! Although it is rare for a PCSO president and speaker to finish their terms simultaneously, it is also rare to see such genuinely good friends lead the AAO at the same time. Drs. Baughman and Varner (Gary and Bob) have been dedicated to giving back to their profession for over 40 years, and their paths have many parallels and common touchstones. Recently, I had a chance to talk with these two gentlemen about their years of leadership and their thoughts as they near the end of their respective terms. I've known both of them for several years, but listening to them speak, I was reminded of how humble they both are (the phrase, "such an honor," was frequently sprinkled in their comments) and that you can tell a true leader by how hard they give others the credit. Both seem to know they could not have accomplished much alone, and they clearly are thrilled that they've accomplished so much together. I talked with each of them about how they initially became involved in organized orthodontics, what they remember about their years of service, and what they hope will be their legacies. 1977 Gary Baughman graduates from Michigan ortho program. 1992 Gary Baughman joins PCSO delegation to AAO.
