RESIDENT
SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Mona Afrand
Orthodontic Resident,
University of Alberta
Department of Orthodontics
FrOM leFt tO right: Dr. Darren Isfeld (first-year
resident), Dr. Mohammed Al-Saleh (orthodontic
PhD resident), Dr. David Lee (second-year
resident), Dr. Mona Afrand (third-year resident),
Dr. Saeed Ghorashi (DASTP resident).
Why did you apply to the
orthodontic program?
My passion for orthodontics started
when I got my braces as a kid. I believe
that orthodontic treatments can have
a huge positive impact on a child's
development, not only in terms of
functional development, but also in
confidence-building and social development. I wanted to make a difference
in people's lives and help them feel
better about themselves.
What are some highlights of your
residency?
What are your plans for after
graduation?
The Master of Science in Orthodontics
program at the University of Alberta
is very strong in both clinical and research aspects. We are privileged to
learn from many great instructors who
are faculty members or orthodontists
from private practices in Edmonton,
Calgary, and Ottawa. This exposes us
to different philosophies in treatment
planning. The program also gives us
the opportunity to treat patients with
Invisalign® and lingual appliances.
We start our training in research from
the first year of the residency with the
Systematic Review course. Most of the
residents are successful in publishing a
couple of articles in peer-reviewed journals during their time in the program.
I have a young family; therefore, I want
to start practicing part-time as an associate. In the long term, I would like to
join a practice that gives me the opportunity to partner or buy in. I am very
excited about the prospect of starting a
new chapter in my life after graduation.
Are you involved in any activities
in the PCSO/AAO?
I presented my research at both the
AAO and PCSO in 2014. I really enjoy
attending these conferences. It is a
great opportunity to learn and meet
new people.
Dr. Afrand
Tell me about your orthodontic
residency program.
My residency program has been a
great experience so far. It has given
me the opportunity to meet incredible
people and learn and grow as a person
and a future orthodontist. I had the
privilege to start practicing in a stateof-the-art clinic in Edmonton. The staff
is amazing and very helpful. The clinic
is running very smoothly. Overall it
has been a very positive experience.
