INTERMEDIATE ENGINEER (Plant Mechanical/Machinery Engineer) Career years 1 and 2 (or years 1 through 5) Career years 3 through 5 (or years 3 through 8) A. On-the-Job Training A. Rotational assignment (Two-year assignment at affiliate location, possibly at central engineering or headquarters) Rotational assignments within plant, in various groups, for exposure to and familiarization with different job functions. Areas to be covered should include machinery, mechanical, inspection, electrical, instrumentation, operations and maintenance. B. In-House Training (applicable to headquarters/centralengineering locations) Plant and/or corporate standards development/revisions and updates Courses in the above Courses dealing with industry standards (API, NEMA, etc.) Machinery (compressors, pumps, steam/gas turbines, gears, turboexpanders, etc.) Involvement in field troubleshooting and upgrading issues Familiarization with equipment, work procedures, data logging practices, etc. Familiarization with spare-parts procurement practices (probability studies) Involvement in life-cycle costing Maintainability input Involvement in structured networking (provide feedback to other groups) B. Outside Training Pursuits Failure analysis and troubleshooting Extension of earlier exposure Practical lubrication technology for machinery Machinery vibration monitoring and optimized analysis Attendance at relevant trade shows and exhibitions (provide feedback to others) Predictive monitoring (lube-oil analysis, valve-temperature monitoring, etc.) Attendance at ASME, AFPM, STLE and related conferences (provide feedback) Speak at local ASME/STLE/Vibration Institute meetings C. Outside Training (suggested minimum once/yr, preferred frequency twice/yr) General vendor-type information courses. Typical examples include GE and/or Siemens gas-turbine maintenance seminars and major mechanical-seal manufacturer courses. Texas A&M University Turbomachinery and Pump Symposia Approved advancement-related public courses. Typical examples include "Machinery Maintenance Cost Saving Opportunities;" "Reciprocating Compressor Operation and Maintenance;" "Piping Technology;" and "Practical Mechanical Engineering Calculation Methods." AFPM & IMC Refinery and Process Plant Reliability Conferences Root-cause-failure-analysis (RCFA) courses D. Personal Training/Self-Study Mandatory review of tables of contents of applicable trade journals like Maintenance Technology, Hydrocarbon Processing and others, as well as government publications (like NASA Tech Briefs) and publications from engineering societies and vendors (like SKF's Evolution), as well as books and conference proceedings. C. Personal Training & Continuing Education Develop short articles for trade journals and/or similar publications Develop short courses (initial aim: in-plant presentations, intraaffiliate presentations) Engage in advanced self-study of probability, statistics, automation, management of change Study applicable economics III. ADVANCED ENGINEER (Corporate Specialist, Core Engineering Specialist, Subject-Matter Expert) Career years 9+, depending on exposure and achievements under IIA/B/C, above Attendance/participation at international conferences Interface with peer groups (discussion panels, standards committees, etc.) Development/presentation of technical papers for engineering conferences Mandatory collection/cataloging/copying/archiving of articles for potential value. Pursuit of book-publishing opportunities (case studies, teaching tools, work procedures) Reviewed books should include texts on machinery-reliability assessment (with checklists and procedures); different pump types/ technologies; Weibull analysis; electric motors; and gear technology, among others.
