Gallery: Clip one Christoph Draeger NEW YORK-BASED ARTIST CHRISTOPH
DRAEGER is best known for a practice that mines news footage of disasters.
Using, as he puts it, “irony and satire to depict destruction”,
Draeger’s work which includes film, photography and installation
explores the media’s seemingly inexhaustible need to report
catastrophes. His video Blow Up, Stroll On 2007 , shown here, explores
visual ennui in the modern world. Re-enacting the club scene in
Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film, Blow Up, Draeger’s version
follows a young man as he threads his way through a dispassionate crowd at
a rock concert. A band deploys all the clichés of a 1960s rock group, but
fails to excite the crowd. In the original Antonioni film, the lead
guitarist incites the crowd to riot by smashing his guitar; but by the
time Draeger’s guitarist has smashed his, the bored audience has already
moved on. Laura Allsop Blow Up, Stroll On, Springhill Institute,
