IT'S GREEN Ford's advances in conventional powertrain technology have led
to higher fuel efficiency and less emissions. Its portfolio also comprises
high-tech diesel engines and innovative direct injection petrol technology.
Alan Cartwright talks to Werner Harbers, director of powertrain operations,
Ford of Europe on the company's powertrain operations and on how Ford is
now leading the field in the search for alternative fuels. Today's
automakers are in a race to deliver sustainable mobility options with the
features, performance, safety, styling and lifestyle appeal consumers
expect. Over time, markets will demand innovation around fossil-fuel
efficiency, lower greenhouse-gas emissions, a decreased ecological
footprint, less noise and greater safety. Bill Clay Ford, in a recent
speech, said, Tackling environmental and social issues is not something a
company does after it is profitable; it must be something we do to be more
profitable. Meanwhile, more conventional powertrain operations have seen
Ford established as an industry leader. Werner Harbers, director of
powertrain operations, Ford of Europe, is responsible for engine and
transmission plants in Bridgend, Dagenham, Cologne, Valencia and Bordeaux,
as well as casting plants in Leamington and Cologne. I am responsible for
engines ranging from the Ford 1.25 litre built in Bridgend right up to the
Aston Martin V12 which powers the Vanquish, he says. As well as engines for
Mazda and Premier Automotive Group brands like Volvo, Land Rover and
Jaguar, Europe also supplies the four litre, six cylinder engines and
transmissions for the US- built Explorer, Mustang and Ranger. 70
