y 1 2007 saw the official launch of Rocket Licensing, a new London based
independent licensing and brand development agency, founded by industry
stalwarts Charlie Donaldson and Rob Wijeratna. Charlie and Rob met at BBC
Wo r l d w i d e where Charlie spent four years before joining Central
Television in a move that began twelve years in ITV working on brands such
as Thunderbirds, Bullseye and Tots TV. Rob meanwhile, spent 12 years at BBC
Worldwide, TOTAL LICENSING ROCKET LICENSING LAUNCHED brand managing and
licensing globally successful brands including Teletubbies, Wallace and
Gromit and Noddy before joining Entertainment Rights Plc where he was
senior brand manager for Postman Pat. With over 30 years of experience
between them working across a diverse range of brands including Bob The
Builder, Tweenies, Engie Benjy, Arsenal FC, Liverpool FC and Little
Britain, Charlie and Rob are ideally placed to head up Rocket Licensing
which specializes in lifestyle, kids and entertainment brands. Rob
commented, “Our aim is to offer a flexible and independent service to
rights’ owners, ensuring their brands get real focus and are built into
successful, long term franchises. We intend to manage a well balanced
roster of brands, which will be developed and licensed in a manner that
ensures they perform with integrity and longevity, leading to true
‘evergreen’ status”. Charlie added, “We are very pleased indeed to
be announcing an initial client line up including, The Brooklyn Brewery
Corporation, 12 Yard Productions, Minotaur International the international
sales arm of Flextech Television and appointed distributor for SMG
Productions and Ginger Productions and XFM. Very shortly, we will also be
making announcements on the acquisition of some exciting kids and
teen/adult brands”. GOLDEN COMPASS LICENSEES UNVEILED New Line Cinema
have a growing number of licensees for their upcoming movie The Golden
Compass which will be released in December. Based on author Philip
Pullman’s bestselling and award-winning novel, The Golden Compass tells
the first story in Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. The Golden
Compass is a fantasy adventure, set in an alternative world where
people’s souls manifest themselves as animals, talking bears fight wars,
and Gyptians and witches co-exist. At the center of the story is Lyra, a
12-year-old girl who starts out trying to rescue a friend who’s been
kidnapped by a mysterious organization known as the Gobblers - and winds
up on an epic quest to save the world. The Golden Compass stars a cast
that includes Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, and Ian
McShane.The film is written and directed by Chris Weitz About A Boy,Antz
and produced by Deborah Forte, President, Scholastic Media, and Bill
Carraro. It is live action with CGI effects. On the toy side, New Line
have signed Arguydal for charms in France, Inkworks for trading cards and
collectible cards in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and Japan, Kosmos
for boardgames in Germany and Master Replicas for action figures,
playsets, electronic toys and plush worldwide. In terms of electronics,
Sega have the worldwide license for wireless and arcade games and, moving
to publishing, Random House have the US license for novels whilst
Scholastic have the worldwide deal for movie tie-in books. T-shirts and
sweatshirts in the US have been licensed to C-Life whilst cake toppers
have been signed to Bakery Crafts. Stationery and paper goods form and
important part of the program with Andrews McMeel and Antioch signed for
US product, Frederich Heye in Germany signed for calendars, Panini signed
for stickers and albums worldwide excluding the US and Japan, Papeteries
Hamelin signed for back to school and Pyramid signed for posters and
postcards in the UK. BRIT CHICKS PRODUCT GOES INTO AUSTRALIA Brand
Champions report that Variety Toys, one of Australia’s leading
independent toy importers and distributors are launching a range of Brit
Chicks and Some Girls stationery and gift products into the Australian
market this year. Located in Melbourne, the business has served the needs
of a diverse range of mainly small retail customers for over thirty years
and, in mid 2004, Variety Toys established Toys @ Home, a division of the
company that sells into the growing Party Plan/Direct Selling industry.
Two years and six catalogues later, the company has consultants in all
States of Australia. Variety Toys CEO, Nick Orloff said, “Variety Toys
and more particularly Toys @ Home is very excited to be working with Brand
Champions. We see Some Girls and Brit Chicks as premium licenses and
products and they will help bring a vibrant and much needed ‘point of
difference’ to our current party plan range”. On a different note,
Brand Champions report that they have signed Multipartner to represent
both Brit Chick and Some girls in the Italian marketplace.
Multipartner’s licensing division specialises in the research, selection
