Volu nteer of the y ea r Cecil Kijewski, R.E.T. A s a self-regulating association, ASET relies on the contributions and tireless efforts of its volunteers. Cecil Kijewski exemplifies the very best, personifying the phrase "Think global - act local." Born in Wetaskiwin and educated in Edmonton, Alberta, Kijewski worked in various careers before he became a technology professional - first as a plumber and pipe fitter for three years, and then in a health care career for eight years. Returning to school, he graduated from the NAIT Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC) program in 1978. After joining ASET as a student member in 1977, he received his C.E.T. designation in 1982 and his R.E.T. designation in 1992. He then worked at Alberta Public Works (APW) in the Mechanical Division for 17 years designing HVAC systems, before starting his current position at H.O. Engineering Ltd. designing HVAC systems for hospitals, commercial buildings, and schools. As a dedicated volunteer, one of his recent contributions has been serving as Chapter Leader for the Edmonton Chapter. Instrumental in rebuilding the chapter under a new chapter model, Kijewski motivated his fellow members to participate as part of the community of technology professionals. Through his efforts, member involvement at Edmonton Chapter events has seen an increase of 300%. In addition to his role as a Chapter Leader, Kijewski has served on the Board of Examiners for the last three years. Regularly attending Board of Examiners meetings on a Saturday every two months, he participates in the review of applicants work experience under the Mechanical discipline. His expertise, knowledge and positive attitude during the meetings make him a very valuable member of the Board of Examiners. Beyond the profession, Kijewski considers his proudest accomplishment to be watching his two daughters, Stephanie & Melissa, become responsible citizens. He volunteers with ASET to develop friendships with fellow members, learn new skills, and for the satisfaction he gains from helping ASET fulfill its mandate. "It means to me that I have helped ASET membership and administration achieve their goals," Kijewski humbly says. "This is the first time I have been rewarded for helping others - it makes me very proud and happy to see smiles on my fellow members' faces." For his commitment and contributions to ASET through his work with the Edmonton Chapter and Board of Examiners, the President's Award for Volunteer of the Year is presented to Cecil Kijewski, R.E.T. TECHNOLOGY ALBERTA | SPRING 2016 | 21
