PROJECT SUMMARY
The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital is the largest freestanding, comprehensive tertiary rehabilitation hospital in
Canada, serving patients of all ages who require complex
rehabilitation to enable them to participate in life to the fullest. As a leading edge academic teaching hospital, the Glenrose participates in educational training programs for health
sciences professionals and offers an array of research and
technology development opportunities.
One of the tools they had long used to assist in wrist rehabilitation-known as FEPS because it assists in rebuilding
capacity with Flexion, Extension, Pronation, and Supination,
the movements a healthy wrist joint is primarily capable of
producing-was past its prime (see photo above). The Technology Innovation Working Group (TIWG) is part of the Glenrose's Research & Technology Development Department,
and engages external partners to develop solutions to clinical care challenges. These partners are engaged through
various channels including, Reverse Trade Show, Post-Secondary Engineering, and Biomedical Programs, and direct
outreach to service providers. The TIWG challenged a team
of NAIT BTech capstone students to enhance some FEPS
designs developed by the University of Alberta students.
Before & after: The original FEPS device has been greatly improved
as a result of contributions from NAIT's BTech students.
