Light Followers Solar Panel Track System Meet the Project Members Connor Froc Patrick Martens I grew up in Okotoks and chose to study at Red Deer College because of the small class sizes and great help and support available from the instructors. I plan on continuing my education and hope to become a Mechanical Engineer and I feel Red Deer College has provided me with a strong foundation for success in the future. Born in Moncton and raised in Maple Ridge, I come from a family of seven. I have always been interested in finding ways to make work better, more efficient, and faster. Because I am competitive and enjoy a challenge, I saw the solar panel project as a great opportunity to combine my passions for the environment and emerging technologies. It really feels like things have come full circle since what convinced me to study Electrical Engineering Technology in the first place was attending an open house at BCIT and seeing the capstone projects created by the graduating students. The presentations from the electrical groups grabbed me and I was hooked. I chose Red Deer because it had the EET program and the men's hockey team recruited me to go play for them. All in all, it was the perfect fit. Derek Lozinski I am a Saskatchewan boy and have been working in the oil sector since I completed high school. It became evident that it is hard to maintain a secure and consistent career with a quality lifestyle when I was always having to travel out of town to work. Electrical technologist careers are fairly diverse with a range of opportunities available. My Dad is an electrician and from the time I was a little kid, he had a tool belt strapped on me when I helped him; so it became just a matter of time before I started studying in the electrical field. I realized that industrial careers for electrical tradesmen and technologists have progressed and are in more demand, offering higher salaries and better-quality jobs. I chose Red Deer College because I liked the city, which is smaller than Calgary and Edmonton, but close enough to both the big centres that I could go visit if I wanted to. The career route I would like to take with my engineering diploma is to become a dual-ticketed Power Systems Electrician and Engineering Technologist and obtain work in electrical utilities, mines, or in the construction/maintenance of drilling rigs. Blair Mulder I am 24 years old and was born and raised in Lacombe. I enjoy a variety of sports and for the last three years have played for the Red Deer College hockey team. Throughout my sporting career I have played multiple times at the national level for baseball and hockey. I enjoy being outdoors whether it is camping, fishing, playing catch, or riding my motorcycle with some buddies. My future goals are to find a career as an Electrical Engineering Technologist where I can put what I have learned in school to good use. I got such a sense of satisfaction from completing our capstone project and having it fully functional. All the hard work our group put in really paid off. TECHNOLOGY ALBERTA | SUMMER 2016 | 17
