EVRAZ Pipe Print Head Carriage
Design and Fabrication
The project developed by SAIT's students with,
and for, EVRAZ, is quite remarkable but that in
itself is unsurprising, when one considers SAIT
will celebrate 100 years of educating Albertans
on Oct. 16, 2016. We are proud of our associations
with all the province's post-secondary institutions
and wish to extend our congratulations to the
faculty, staff, students, and alumni on this
milestone achievement.
PROJECT SUMMARY
The purpose of this project was to develop a prototype pipe stencil carriage system that could be combined with the existing EVRAZ
production line. The carriage system was designed to seamlessly
integrate into the current operation so that it could be tested in its
intended environment by EVRAZ upon completion. (We're proud to
note that the client liaison on this project was none other than 2016 ASET
Technologist of the Year, Ryan Blair, C.E.T. - Ed.)
The current setup at EVRAZ's plant features a worker who is responsible to spray paint over a cardboard stencil. This system was examined to determine where improvements could be made in terms of
efficiency and safety for the employees. EVRAZ decided to purchase
an ink jet printer head. In order for this printer to work, a carriage had
to be designed so that the printer head could effectively carry out the
stenciling process. This was achieved by deciding to automate the
printing process, which would be the safest and most reliable option.
The carriage assembly that has been designed for EVRAZ operates
using a side-mounted orientation that will print the stencils onto stationary pipes. Most purchased components of the carriage are standard sized, readily available, off-the-shelf parts. Other components
were also manufactured and assembled using standard techniques.
Standardization and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)
principles were used throughout to ensure minimum cost and time required to replace or repair any components of the carriage in the future.
The previous system (above) will give place
to the new technology to be installed in the
area indicated by the red square (below).
