ASET Technology Alberta Winter 2018 - 21
Congratulations
to all involved!
Now that's no slight. A team composed primarily of firstand second-year engineering technology diploma students,
has no chance against third- and fourth-year students from
our nation's top engineering schools. Right? After all, they
had about four months to raise funds then design and
build a 350-pound toboggan comprising a structural frame,
functional braking and steering systems, and a running
surface made entirely of concrete. Oh...and the beast had to
be capable of transporting five people safely while meeting
rigid technical guidelines. Like we said, "No chance, right?"
Yeah... right.
It turns out that SAIT has always competed well in
this event. One university went so far as to try to create a
toboggan that would "look like a SAIT design." Apparently,
Canada's engineering programs are under no illusion as to
the level of competition presented by the Calgary-based
polytechnic. While SAIT may not have claimed the overall
title in over 30 years, the institution's teams have historically
fared well in a number of the 15 individual competition elements, which include:
* Concrete mix design;
* Frame design;
* Steering;
* Braking;
* Technical report;
* Project presentation;
* Race-day speed; and,
* School spirit.
All this proves that the team's combination of intelligence,
hard work, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit is a
recipe for success. Thirty students representing seven
faculties, supported by four academic advisors, raised more
than half the project's $40,300. They then designed, built,
and steered their sled to overall victory-and by a comfortable margin. SAIT's winning entry was awarded a total score
of 75.44 out of 100, significantly more than second-place
finisher University of Calgary's 69.60.
The instructors who so ably guided the students were
the CVT Program's Milan Niksic, Ben Ellard, and Brian
Backs, as well Nikolay Bukharin from MET.
Congratulations to all involved.
