May 2010 Message from the Prime Minister Infrastructure Program, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the Clean Energy Fund. The Summits present a unique opportunity to tell the story of Canadian innovation – from the discovery of insulin to the development of the Canadarm to the invention of the BlackBerry® – but there is still more to do. Canada’s Science and Technology Strategy will help us to realize the vision of a country that is an even more attractive international destination for research. This is an exciting time for all Canadians. As we work to see that all our visitors will return with fond memories of this great country, we will also seize this unique opportunity to ensure that the world hears more about Canadian leadership and innovation. Sincerely, This June, Canadian leadership will be in the global spotlight, as we host the G-8 and G-20 Summits. Following-up on the success of Vancouver and Whistler hosting the Olympic Winter Games, we have another unique opportunity to welcome the world and tell Canada’s story. As world leaders gather, first in Huntsville and then in Toronto, for the G-8 and G-20 Summits, they will certainly be aware of forecasts that Canada’s economic growth will substantially exceed that of other G-7 nations. We can rightly present Canada as a model of competitiveness during a time of economic recovery. In our Summit discussions around the theme of Recovery and New Beginnings, I will be sharing with my colleagues details of how Canada is emerging from recession. Our falling tax rates, stable banking system, commitment to free trade and open markets, targeted infrastructure investments and support for innovation have all contributed to Canada’s growing economic strength. Canada’s Economic Action Plan advances the economy of tomorrow by investing in innovation. We are making substantial investments in the jobs of the future through our Knowledge The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P. Prime Minister of Canada A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am very pleased to extend warm greetings to everyone attending the 2010 G8 and G20 Summits, and to readers of the Canada at the Summit supplement. The G8 and G20 Summits demonstrate the spirit of co-operation that exists between nations. We all recognize that, in today’s interconnected world, we — government, business, and institutions — work best when we work together. My colleagues and I also believe that the way to address the challenges we face is by building mutually beneficial partnerships, demonstrating effective leadership and strengthening our ability to innovate in every sector. From biotech companies, advanced manufacturing and financial services industries to international leaders in communications, alternative energy and green technologies, companies have thrived in Ontario, thanks to creative collaborations and our excellent business environment. In keeping with our Open Ontario Plan, our government is taking significant steps to maintain Ontario’s position as a key North American hub for international business, and aims to make the province one of the most competitive jurisdictions in the industrialized world in terms of the taxation of new capital investment. As Premier, I feel enormously privileged to lead Ontario — a province rich in assets, optimism and opportunity. These summits play a crucial role in helping global economies to identify and seize opportunities that will fuel new economic growth. My colleagues and I look forward to seeing the results of the collective action and strategic thinking that are hallmarks of these important forums. Dalton McGuinty Premier
