| B Y DEBORAH GREAVE S YLW’s environmental initiatives K elowna International Airport has carried out three key studies on the growing facility’s effects on the local environment and managing growth. The work is being carried out by InterVISTAS Consulting, a consulting firm with specific expertise in aviation. The subjects of the three studies are greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), Mill Creek, and ground transportation access, each with longterm implications for both people and the environment in the Okanagan Valley. The Mill Creek study examines protection of the watercourse in competition with YLW’s need for a parallel aircraft taxiway as identified in the 2025 Masterplan. “The airport property is long and narrow, so the creek presents a challenge,” explains Dave Fuller, assistant general manager of YLW operations. “We’re looking for ways to minimize disturbance of the creek when we build the new east parallel taxiway.” “Long before it was mandatory, we decided at YLW to take the initiative to find out what our baseline GHG emissions were and started working on reductions. The study of greenhouse gas emissions is a follow-up to an earlier study compiled from data collected in 2003,” said Fuller. Kelowna International Airport continues to measure how it has done on its own initiative to reduce its GHG emissions footprint. One of the exciting aspects of this report is that it’s leading edge. “The City is interested in seeing what we’ve managed to accomplish in the past five years. From this point on, we’ll be doing an inventory study each year of the entire Colin Jewall airport footprint. We’ll look at our own buildings such as the use of fuel for heat, as well as the fuel used for aircraft. We’ll consider passenger traffic to and from the airport, our own ground vehicles and all tenants on the site,” said Fuller. Successful changes already employed at YLW include using independentlypowered passenger loading bridges that save jet fuel after landing, introduction of newer generation (NG) aircraft, and flying larger aircraft to reduce the number of trips. As soon as results of the studies are in, 12 YLW CONNECTION
