YLW NEWS 8900 Feet of Excitement Unveiled! A pivotal point in Kelowna International Airport’s history was reached on Friday November 7, 2008 as 8900 feet (2,712.72 metres) of runway was officially dedicated in front of a crowd of 200 spectators. “This is a proud and historic moment for Kelowna International Airport and the Okanagan Valley,” said Airport General Manager Sam Samaddar. “Today we transition from a continental serving facility to an intercontinental airport.” A major benefit to the longer runway is the ability to accommodate larger aircraft that can provide direct service into Europe. The extension also means more business for the local aerospace industry such as Kelowna Flightcraft through the ability to attract and service larger planes. The project, which began February 2008, extended the runway from 7200 ft to 8900 ft was completed on time and on budget at a cost of $8 million. Airport, government, tourism and business leaders kept their eyes on the sky as a DC10 - brought in especially for the event by Kelowna Flightcraft - became the largest airplane yet to land and take off from Kelowna. The event was brought to a close with a traditional ceremonial dance by the Westbank First Nations dancers. n Fill the Boot Darrell Belgrove (l-r), Don Glavin and Greg Bowman were just a few of the Airport Operations Specialists who volunteered their time and collected money for Muscular Dystrophy. The crew took part in the annual Fill the Boot campaign and collected $1241.84 thanks to generous donations from the airport tenants and passengers. Muscular Dystrophy is the progressive weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles that control body movement. Over time, people with neuromuscular disorders may lose the ability to walk, speak, and ultimately breathe. Fire departments across Canada have raised more than $61.3 million since 1954 to help fund research into Muscular Dystrophy. Thank you YLW staff, tenants and passengers for your support! n WINTER 2009 27
