National pooling talks to start? N
egotiations could start soon on forming a national all-milk pool that would share all Canadian markets and revenues among all Canadian producers, according to a report from the recent Canadian Milk Supply Management Committee (CMSMC) meeting. Canadian Dairy Commission (CDC) and Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) representatives had met with representatives from seven of the 10 provinces by late January, and were to meet with the remaining three within a few weeks. A report on the meetings is scheduled for presentation to the CMSMC meeting in April. Negotiations could begin shortly after that. At present, Canadian dairy farmers share only special class markets and revenues nationally. Two regional pools, the P5 and the Western Pool, have operated since 1995. New-
foundland remains on its own. Agreement on a full national pool is widely viewed as the first step needed before a national decision-making body could be considered.
