NEW’N’NOTED C anWest DHI will start providing somatic cell count (SCC) analysis free of charge to herds that enroll on regular DHI services until August 2012. The offer coincides with Canada’s move to lower SCC levels to 400,000 from 500,000 starting August 2012. A recent University of Guelph study revealed Ontario DHI herds have lower tank SCC. It also showed non-DHI herds have a 40 per cent higher risk of incurring SCC penalties at the 400,000 cell level. CanWest DHI to offer members free somatic cell count analysis Demos to take centre stage Canada’s 2011 Outdoor Farm Show to take place Sept. 13 to 15 in Woodstock, Ont. will feature a host of live demonstrations and a new biomass field plot. T Lower SCC contributes to better milk quality, production and higher profits. SCC is an optional lab analysis that almost all DHI herds subscribe to, in addition to the basic fat and protein testing. New and existing DHI members can benefit from the promotion from lab costs being spread over more herds and samples. For more information about DHI services, testing options and pricing, contact your DHI field service representative or call DHI at 1-800-549-4373. Last year, COFS organized its largest field demonstration ever, featuring more than 20 pieces of tillage equipment in the Southwest Demo Field. In 2011, tillage equipment companies will focus their demonstration entries on technologies that can effectively break through tougher corn stubble created by stronger genetics. New developments in biogas technologies and a new biomass field plot will also be featured. “We are working with Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association to showcase three types of biomass,” says Doug Wagner, COFS vice-president. “We’ll be planting two acres each of miscanthus, switchgrass and a prairie grass mixture so that we can demonstrate planting, harvesting and pelletization equipment.” The new feature is part of a three-year commitment to give farmers an opportunity to get some hands-on experience with the new technology. There will also be new additions to several demonstrations: • pasture and grazing; • robotic milking; • automatic calf feeding; • biogas; • animal handling; • carcass competition. “Our exhibitors are constantly bringing their best products to Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show and they take great pride in putting their equipment through its paces out in the demo fields,” says Paul Roper, COFS sales and demonstrations consultant. COFS will take place Sept. 13, 14 and 15 in Woodstock, Ont. For more information, visit www.OutdoorFarmShow.com.
