rnold Meat Packers, the Kitchener-based slaughterhouse that was once Gencor Foods cull cow processing plant, officially opened for business in early February. The plant, which slaughters dairy cows more than 30 months old that can no longer be milked, processed 41 cows on its first day of operation, says Mihaela Ciuciureanu, vice-president and co-owner. “We want dairy farmers to know we are open for business and ready to receive their cull cows,” says Mihaela. “They now have another option to send their cows for slaughter instead of paying to truck them to Quebec or the U.S.” Mihaela and her husband, George, purchased the plant over a year ago for $1.6 million from Farm Credit Canada, Gencor Foods’ main creditor. So far, they’ve spent close to $600,000 upgrading the facility. The 56,000-square-foot plant, located on Arnold St., had been sitting vacant for almost three years after Gencor Foods was forced to close it in 2008, putting 124 people out of work.
