The three researchers have had extensive experience in working with green roofs and their potential contribution to reducing energy consumption. Both Drs. Sailor and Bass have simulated the impact of green roofs, white roofs and the urban forest on the urban heat island and have integrated different green roof energy balance models into building energy modeling platforms (EnergyPlus and esp-r). Dr. Spolek runs the Green Roof Design and Test Laboratory at psu. In this facility, he can measure heat flux through portable green roof sections to assess thermal performance of green roof designs. Both esp-r and EnergyPlus require some level of expertise with building energy simulation. As a result they are not readily used in the early phases of building design. This tool, the Green Roof Energy Calculator, will be based on the output from refined versions of the previously developed green roof energy balance models, but will not require the user to be an expert in building energy simulation. The project will use existing and new data to optimize model parameters, conduct a model inter-comparison, estimate uncertainty in model output, and perform a suite of simulations to generate energy performance data for various green roof design options in multiple cities. These results will then be incorporated into a graphical user interface to be made readily available to the target audience. By 2010, the Green Roof Energy Calculator will also be integrated with the existing, web-enabled life cycle assessment framework (a.k.a. the GreenSave Calculator) available on the grhc website (www.greenroofs.org).
