Hotel and residential plaza access would be shared, but the position of the office wing dictated that it would require its own entrance. The two separate operations of the hotel had distinct program requirements. The first design challenge to overcome was resolving the two distinct access routes in a way that gave equal prominence to each. Placement of the fountain at the center of the design served as a focal point and organizing element. An ellipse, given its oblong nature, lent itself well to responding to the hotel on its long axis and the office at its end. The fountain ellipse gradually unravels, if you will, to create gathering space for the hotels, seating area for the office users, circulation around the plaza, open lawn, landscaped buffers and access to the north and south overlooks. This rather simple concept provided both a clear and effective organization of the space as well as a dynamic view when seen from above. PLANTING FOR SUN & SHADE Planting of the green roof required careful consideration not only because of the restrictions inherent to green roofs, but also due to the fact that the shade cast by the 20 stories of condominium and hotel tower and the five floors of office along the south and east edge of the roof created essentially two separate micro-environments. It was important that the plant material and its placement help to strengthen the concept of the unraveling form. This meant that the long drifts of plant material adjacent to the pathways and along the perimeter of the space would need to thrive equally well in sun and shade. Emphasis on utilizing plant materials with long flowering REGISTER NOW Green Roofs for Healthy Cities’ annual Conference and Trade Show is a vital opportunity for professional development, networking and sourcing products and services.
