The arching basin at the base of the wall was designed to retain only three inches of water, the intent being to create a shallow ripple pool that would generate interesting light patterns as reflected sunlight from the surrounding architecture danced across its surface. Scuppers inconspicuously set into the base of the wall maintain the water depth and hide the drains that return the water to the overflow in the equipment room below. The concept of the green roof, though centuries old, is one that until recently had been forgotten in architecture and urban design. However, the demand for quality open space in today’s high density urban areas and our greater awareness of the impact of development on the environment has spurred a rediscovery or reinvestigation of their place in the urban fabric. The Vue is the result of the evolution of this new thinking. Its success as a viable green space is confirmation of the social, economic and environmental benefits green roofs can provide. The Vue is one of Baltimore’s growing inventory of green roofs contributing to its ranking of third in square footage of green roof installations nationally. Increasingly, Baltimore-based developers are realizing the economic benefit green roofs have to offer. Given the scarcity of open space in many higher density, residential developments, the ability to offer refuge from the urban jungle without leaving the confines of the development is becoming a significant advantage.
