Green Roofs - Living Architecture Monitor - Fall 2008 - (Page 32) POLICY SQUARE FEET OF EXTENSIVE GREEN ROOF SPACE IN THE HEART OF THE DOWNTOWN BUSINESS DISTRICT an extensive green roof that will fully handle 80 per cent of the 24-hour rain events in Minneapolis each year. Target Center was already using energy efficient chilled water cooling through the downtown district energy system, but still paid nearly $400,000 a year for cooling. And Minneapolis may be the only city in North America that completely eliminates stormwater fees for green roof areas on a square-footfor-square-foot basis, saving the sports facility another us $9,200 a year. kdp could have calculated these savings on a net present value (npv) basis but found that rising costs for energy and stormwater fees tend to offset the npv calculation and merely adds complexity to the model. kdp also determined that the costs for tearing off the old roof and bringing in a crane to get materials up to the Target Center rooftop were comparable between both roof options. The structural weight-bearing capacity of the Target Center was a major issue, because the facility hangs heavy sound and lighting equipment from interior roof supports during rock concerts and other events. That means the green roof system has to have a similar weight to the current loose-laid, rockballasted roof membrane, about 15 pounds per square foot. The challenges with a large project such as this one are considerable but city officials are betting that green roof firms will bid competitively because of its scale, high visibility and marketing benefits for the firm involved. So,if all goes according to plan, there will be another major green roof project in Minneapolis by the time of the Timberwolves’ first jump ball for the 2009-2010 nba Season.
