STEPHEN R KELLERT PhD ON THE ROOF WITH… TWEEDY/ORDWAY PROFESSOR OF SOCIAL ECOLOGY CO DIRECTOR OF THE HIXON CENTER FOR URBAN ECOLOGY YALE UNIVERSITY Interview by Caroline Nolan For more than three decades, Stephen R. Kellert, PhD, has focused on the human-nature relationship. In addition to authoring more than 100 published works, he has garnered numerous awards including the prestigious National Conservation Achievement Award (National Wildlife Federation, 1997). Kellert has served on commi ees of the National Academy of Sciences, and is a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (ICUN) Species Survival Commission Groups. In his newest book, Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life (John Wiley & Sons, 2008), Kellert along with co-editors Judith H. Heerwagen and Martin L. Mador, have gathered a plethora of prominent scientists and leading thinkers on the subject of “biophilic design,” a term he deﬁnes as: “Buildings and landscapes that enhance human physical and mental well-being by fostering positive connections between people and nature in places of cultural and ecological meaning and signiﬁcance.” Contributors include biomimicry guru, Janine Benyus; one of the fathers of green architecture, Bill Browning; and Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deﬁcit Disorder (Algonquin Books, 2005). We interviewed Kellert, the Tweedy/Ordway Professor of Social Ecology and co-director of the Hixon Center for Urban Ecology at Yale University, on campus in New Haven, Connecticut at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies to learn more about the exciting new area of biophilic design.
