Green Roofs - Living Architecture Monitor - Winter 2009 - (Page 9) The roof of the atrium, which connects the Eco Office and Resource Center, is comprised of Energy Star pavers. The pavers are insulating foam boards with a finished concrete coating that protects the insulation while reflecting heat off the atrium roof. The roof is an integrated system of living architecture, a power-generating photovoltaic array and a water harvesting system. These systems used together help the Eco Office reduce potable water consumption by over 80 percent of a typical office of similar size, generate 11 percent of its energy on site and use 70 percent less energy than a similarly sized office building. The Eco Office achieves its potable water demand reduction through low-flow fixtures, automatic faucet sensors and a rainwater collection system that uses two cisterns. The green roof cistern collects water run-off from the solar canopy and has a capacity to hold 1750 gallons. The water captured is primarily used for flushing toilets, misting the hvac units for evaporative cooling and watering the roof-top vegetation. This whole-system approach incorporating a green roof, photovoltaic array and rain water harvesting helps the Eco Office showcase how roof- tops can be used in sustainable building design creating more energy efficient buildings and a healthier environment. Don’t miss a chance to tour the Southface building during the upcoming 7th Annual Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference, Awards and Trade Show from June 3-5, 2009. Check out www.greenroofs.org for more info about the conference and registration. YES YOU CAN Did you know that by 2013, the overall green building market is forcasted to more than double? Be ready to embrace these changing times and become a recognized professional by taking the Green Roof Professional (GRP) Accreditation Exam in 2009 (to be launched in Atlanta on June 5). Our new GRPs (architects, landscape architects, contractors, engineers) will have demonstrated their knowledge of best practices in both the black arts (the essential, non-living aspects of the green roof) and the green arts (the living components of a green roof) and will provide a new level of confidence to their clients. Register now for the exam at www.greenroofs.org http://www.buildingdashboard.com http://www.greenroofs.org http://www.greenroofs.org
