Peck Make plans to be in Vancouver, British Columbia from November 30th to December 3rd, 2010 and join the growing family of passionate and dedicated individuals working to build the green roof and wall industry and move us closer to the dream regenerative buildings and vibrant, healthy communities. In addition to learning from more than 50 expert presenters, we will engage in leading edge discussions about green wall challenges, how to “green” the green roofing system, and establishing a rating system for green roofs and more. Here’s a quick snap shot of just a few of the exceptional leaders you will meet in Vancouver – pioneering people whose work is driven by passion and commitment. 28 LIVING ARCHITECTURE MONITOR Maureen Connelly, B.Sc., B.E.D.S., M.Arch., MAIBC, Center for Architectural Ecology, School of Construction and Environment British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). The Center’s mission is to conduct world-class, innovative research on green roof and living wall systems and to provide research-based education across disciplines, to students and practitioners. Connelly and her colleagues work in a laboratory designed and built by students, which collects green roof and wall performance data round the clock. A brilliant researcher, Connelly's leadership is one of the main reasons we are in Vancouver, partnering with BCIT. She will be presenting pioneering research on the acoustical performance of green roof systems. Tom Liptan, FASLA, RLA, technical eco-roof manager, Sustainable Stormwater Division, City of Portland, Oregon. No green roof conference would be complete without participation from Liptan, one of the earliest green roof pioneers. Patient and passionate, Liptan is a man who built his own stormwater research project on the family garage after being inspired, as have many, after speaking with Cornelia Hahn Oberlander about green roofs in the mid 1990s. Last year, the City of Portland released an important, pioneering study on the lifecycle costs and benefits of green roofs which he and his colleague, Ed MacMullan, senior economist at ECONorthwest will be presenting. Dr. Ray Tomalty Smart Cities Research Services (SCRS) is a consulting group based in Montreal, Quebec. The group specializes in research on issues related to the management of urban growth and development such as intensification, affordable housing and green infrastructure. Tomalty recently completed a major study to develop new techniques that provide monetary values for green roof benefits, such as stormwater, sound attenuation and property value. He has been integrating these new methodologies into the GreenSave Calculator, available to GRHC Members. Nancy Mackin, MAIBC, MRAIC, PhD – Wilp Wilxo’ oskwhl Nisga’a & University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, British Columbia. Mackin recently earned her Ph.D in UBC's Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program (architecture, architectural history, cultural ecology, and landscape architecture). She has presented her research and designs in many forums including the International Federation of Landscape Architects, the Society for the Study of Architecture in Canada, and numerous Canada-wide publications. During her more than 15 years of intensive private architectural practice, Mackin was awarded numerous design awards including the Grand Care Award for Site Planning and Design, IDIBC bronze and silver medals, Royal City Builders' Award Grand Prize (building of the year). She will be sharing the wisdom of green roof construction from the indigenous peoples of the Northwestern North America. SUMMER 2010
