Charlie Miller, PE, Roofscapes Inc., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is rightly considered by many to be a “green roof technical guru.” Over the past decade his firm, with roots in civil engineering, horticulture, soil science and hydrology, the green roof engineering firm has founded the modern American veneer green roof market. His firm has won more than five GRHC Green Roof Awards of Excellence. Miller and his colleagues Kirstin Weeks, Arup, and Robert Berghage, Penn State University will be presenting on policy paradigms for voluntary installation of green roofs by large retail developers with lessons for stormwater policymakers. Kerry Ross, BArch, MRAIC, LEED AP, GRP, project architect for IBI Group, Calgary, Alberta. Ross is our 2009 Civic Awards of Excellence winner, granted in part for her pioneering effort to establish the Alberta Ecoroof Initiative. In 2000, Ross began working on the Bison Courtyard in Banff, Alberta, one of the first buildings in that province to integrate contemporary green roof systems into its design. The project changed the course of her career and nine years later, Ross is still at it with patience and poise. She will be sharing new information with us on designing green roofs for cold climates, after an extensive field study in Norway and telling us about an extraordinary intensive green roof project – The Lois Hole Green Roof Healing Garden. Dr. David Sailor, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, Portland State University, Oregon. Sailor and his colleagues have been developing a Green Roof Energy Calculator to estimate the summer thermal benefits of different green roof assemblies, in different climates as part of a project with the USGBC, University of Toronto and Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. Sailor is also conducting pioneering research on solar photo voltaic efficiency and green roofs which may unlock new business opportunities to integrate these two complementary rooftop technologies. Bruce Hemstock, BCSLA, CSLA, LEED AP, is a principal in PWL Partnership, and a partner in charge of the six-acre green roof that now adorns the Vancouver Convention Center, the location of this year’s CitiesAlive! conference. PWL Partnership’s design philosophy draws inspiration from the ecological, historical and cultural aspects of the landscape to produce designs that are sustainable, innovative, imaginative, distinct, appropriate and cost effec- tive. This is certainly reflected in the Vancouver Convention Centre. Eden Brukman, BA, MA, LEED AP is the research director for Cascadia Region Green Building Council, which is pioneering the Living Building Challenge, a voluntary approach to move the building industry toward sustainable, restorative buildings. An architect and sustainable building advisor, Brukman has focused her professional career on incorporating socially and environmentally responsible strategies into design and construction. In Vancouver, she will be with us to provide a lecture on the new Living Building Challenge 2.0, which includes such forward thinking requirements such as food production, beauty and biophilic design. Greg Allen, P. Eng, LEED AP, is an award-winning engineer who has been working on sustainable buildings and energy systems for more than 30 years. He was recently honored with a lifetime achievement award from Sustainable Buildings Canada. His first green roof on the Boyne River Nature School in the 1970s self-seeded. For the past three years Allen has been working at HoK as an environmental strategists and he is currently a principal with Sustainable Edge and a senior associate with the Canadian Urban Institute. A visionary, Allen will share his thoughts on the subject of peak oil, urban agriculture and the future of cities at our closing plenary. In Vancouver, we will also launch new courses in Advanced Maintenance and Urban Rooftop Agricultural Production. Both of these new courses are in fact the product of many passionate, dedicated volunteers including Keith Agoada, Andy Creath and Nathan Griswold .
