PASSING OF A LEGEND LAWRENCE HALPRIN FOREVER CHANGED THE DESIGN OF AMERICAN CITIES THROUGH HIS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE t is with great sadness that we note the passing of the American Lawrence Halprin, who died in San Francisco this past October at the age of 93 – a man who has been called the “single most influential landscape architect of the postwar years.” I “Landscape architecture deals with things that are so important. It’s partly nature, it’s partly culture, it’s partly social – it’s all of these.” The late Lawrence Halprin Among his projects, many award-winning, is the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C., the 52-acre base of Yosemite Falls and the historically significant collaboration with architect Charles Moore to create Sea Ranch, a 5,000-acre stretch of ecologically sensitive California coast featuring 1,500 houses. “I rejected any implication that what I do is decoration,” Halprin told a San Francisco Chronicle reporter in 2007. “Landscape architecture deals with things that are so important. It’s partly nature, it’s partly culture, it’s partly social – it’s all of these.” D NEW FEDERAL STORMWATER REQUIREMENTS FROM EPA GREEN ROOFS PART OF THE SOLUTION O n December 8th, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EAP) issued Technical Guidelines for managing stormwater at Federal Government Facilities under Section 438 of the EISA. This section of EISA states: “Stormwater runoff requirements for federal development projects. The sponsor of any development or redevelopment project involving a federal facility with a footprint that exceeds 5,000 square-feet shall use site planning, design, construction and maintenance strategies for the property to maintain or restore, to the maximum extent technically feasible, the predevelopment hydrology of the property with regard to the temperature, rate, volume and duration of flow.” The technical guidelines include a wide range of green infrastructure/low impact development technologies including bioswales, cisterns, porous pavement and green roofs. For more details, visit: www.epa.gov.owow/nps/lid/section438/ Training on how to comply with Section 438 will be a major component of Green Roofs for Healthy Cities upcoming Regional Conference and Training in Washington D.C. on June 2, 2010.
