The best gardens result from collaboration of all stakeholders. In the case of the Olson Family Garden charrette, Schaal says “the group came to consensus very quickly on the purpose, objectives and program elements, and studied how the garden could be organized and artistically fit in program elements within that pattern.” (For more information on the design charette, see page 17.) From there, the design team conceived the garden as a “complete landscape” with four distinctive elements – woodland, meadow, stream and hill – inspired by nature’s diversity. The “woodland” is represented by trees which provide shade while the lawn exemplifies the “meadow” creating open space. The “stream” wanders through the garden providing gentle, soothing sounds and the “hill” is brought to life on the rooftop with sloping landscapes.
