aving lived in cities from Seattle to Hong Kong, there really must be something quite extraordinary to keep Barbara Deutsch in Washington. “It is a civic landscape unlike any other,” she says. “[It] is equally compelling and energetic, and no matter what side you are on, there is a general interest in trying to create change at a large scale.” Deutsch earned a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Virginia as well as a Master in Landscape Architecture from the University of Washington. In 2006
she was awarded a Loeb Fellowship from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and was named a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects this September. But before switching fields, Deutsch was a marketing professional at IBM for ten years, recognized for her efforts with the Golden Circle, awarded to only the top 5% of marketing representatives across the country. She then went on to work as associate director at BioRegional’s One Planet Communities, an organization that she believes has the best approach to sustainability, as it
