NOT fAR fROM THE TREE, TORONTO, ONTARIO
Not Far From The Tree, a project of Tides Canada Initiatives, is a community-based charitable project located in Toronto, Canada that focuses on putting Toronto’s fruit to good use by picking and sharing the bounty. As many homeowners can attest, picking and maintaining fruit trees can sometimes be difficult and daunting, especially with hectic schedules. Not Far From The Tree alleviates the stress of worrying by mobilizing volunteers to pick the sweet bounty at harvest time. Toronto homeowners simply register their trees and when the time comes to harvest the bounty, divided into three parts, is shared evenly among the tree owner, volunteers (aka gleaners) and community agencies that can put the fruit to good use. Donations are delivered by bicycle to food banks, shelters and community kitchens throughout the various neighbourhoods. In 2008, their first year of picking, approximately 3000 pounds of fruit was picked throughout the city, increasing immensely each year. Founder, Laura Reinsborough started Not Far From The Tree by picking in one neighbourhood and ran the organization entirely on volunteer power. By the end of the season the project had amassed a crew of 150 volunteers, picking a total of 3003 pounds of fruit by the end of its first season. To date, Not Far From The Tree has picked over 35,000 pounds of fruit and has over 1000 eager volunteers ready to help harvest from the urban orchard. What exactly is a food forest? A food forest is a gardening technique or land management system, which mimics a woodland ecosystem by substituting edible trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. Fruit and nut trees make up the upper level, berry shrubs, edible perennials and annuals make up the lower levels. The Beacon Food Forest started in 2009 as a final design project for a permaculture design course. The 7-acre site is located in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood to the west side of Jefferson Park, 2.5 miles from downtown Seattle. The Food Forest is set to include an Edible Arboretum with fruits gathered from regions around the world, a Berry Patch for canning, gleaning and picking, a Nut Grove with trees providing shade and sustenance, a Community Garden using the p-patch model for families to grow their own food and a Kids Area. Support for this project was awarded in the form of a grant
