to the fundamental principle of green roof design; the desired intent of the building owner. I recommended fertilizing and adding plants to fill in the bare spots, perhaps even embracing the natural evolution of these systems by including various varieties of clover. Adding flowering annuals at various times of the year will produce visual beauty and seasonal character. The results of the lab tests revealed a low nutrient level
that is indicative of poor maintenance. While one area of the green roof has experienced plant failure, the other areas are being overrun with unwanted plant species. Both are the result of improper maintenance regiments. Ironically, the design intent of increasing growth media depth was likely to reduce maintenance however it has had the opposite effect. The green roof industry has done well to increase the dialog regarding maintenance requirements. It’s time to redouble our efforts and convince building owners to commit the resources critical for the long term success of their green roof investment.
