LAM: What do you think causes green roofs and walls to be
value engineered out of new building projects?
Jeffrey Bruce (JB): Green roofs are often removed
because new buildings are often over budget from the
get go. The performance and amenities desired are
often beyond the available budget. Various building
professionals have different strategies to deal with this
pressure, one being the value engineering of the green
roof and other green infrastructure elements. Construction professionals are concerned primarily with
on time and on budget, and often don't care about the
green roof.
