Just the beginning of the story Literacy Fund Each year, 20 Canadian elementary schools share a $1.5 million Love of Reading Literacy Fund grant that provides new books and literacy programs to inspire their students. Recipient schools are partnered with their local Indigo, Chapters or Coles store and employees work directly with teachers and students to strengthen community ties and transform school libraries. Since 2004, the Fund has awarded $9 million to 90 high-needs elementary schools. The most compelling outcome of the grant is the transformation of our schools, even in the first year of their grant. Student literacy scores increase. Their self-esteem is given an invaluable boost as they feel, often for the first time, worthy of being invested in. And the school’s community of parents and siblings is drawn to the refreshed library which often becomes a hub for the neighbourhood. And this is just the beginning.
