S Wrap it Up H ave you ever wanted to jaunt around the world to witness some of the most unique boutique restaurants? From the ultra modern ode to Versailles’ Hall of mirrors at Gold in Milan, to the detailed Imperial Chinese design at Wing Lei in Las Vegas, , Boutique Restaurants reveals the floor plans, architectural insight and inspiration behind these stunning dining experiences. One of our favourites is Rama at Fifty in London; designed by Jeffrey Beers, and a regular dining spot for the Duke of Wellington and The Count d’Orsay, the mostly Pan-Asian cuisine is thanks to Jean Georges Vongerichten- we’ll take a table for two. Published by Harper Collins; $49.00, www.amazon.ca wooning over cakes seems ridiculous, that is, until you see these creations. New York cake artist Sylvia Weinstock is legendary for her jaw-dropping cakes designed for weddings, inaugural balls and birthday parties. Weinstock’s meticulous work combined with her never-say-never attitude has made her the source for opulent cakes. As she explains, it all started with one sensational cake that Donald Bruce White, a society caterer noticed. He then began ordering them for his clients. Sensational Cakes is a repository of Weinstock’s sketches, recipes, cakes in every form (Fabergé eggs, tea pots and animals) and of course her signature flowers (the protea is a rare spectacle). The book is a colourful display of cakes, explanations, inspiration shots - a treat for anyone with an appreciation of beauty. Published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang $48.95, www.amazon.ca ixologist Scott Beattie of the Bar at Cyprus is known for his use of locally sourced fruits and twists on classic bar fare. In Artisanal Cocktails Beattie focuses on drinks inspired by the seasons with an exotic array of recipes such as lemongrass lemonade, and The Pomeranian, a stunningly bright glass of black-eyed Susans, green Amaranth, peppermint sprigs and lemon zest. The author also gives recipes for simple syrups, foams, an eclectic mix of garnishes (lotus root chips, anyone?) and great serving tips such as the proper shape for ice in cocktails (did you know that a mint julep should be served with crushed ice, while a Frankfort Manhattan should use larger ice cubes?). Cheers. These books are straight out of the twenty-first century. Proving that some things never go out of style, the books mix lessons on softball, with codes and ciphers, maps of Melanesia and chess moves. All the fun and wonder, all the games, thrills and curiosities that first awaken in the early years, all that is best in childhood is condensed in the spirit of these two books. With much of the same material from the original Daring and Dangerous best-sellers and few extra tidbits, the pocket-sized format is perfect for taking on long car rides or plane trips. Presenting a cornucopia of topics to pique children’s interest, and the books are a wonderful catalyst for cultivating life-long interests and hobbies. Most of all the Pocket Daring Book for Boys Things to Know and the Daring Books for Girls encourage children to discover more about the topics that interest them through further reading. These are welcome books to little ones, who in a generation or two will be presenting them to their own children and grandchildren. The books remind us of one simple fact. If we could all live our lives with the wisdom and wonder, the daring and danger of childhood – what a life it would be.
